This antique Jacquard coverlet is from the mid-1800s! This coverlet is a four-color coverlet in blue, red, white, and beige-gold. Four-color coverlets were the most complex of the Jacquard coverlets to make.

In the mid-1800s, coverlets were often woven from wool, and cotton, flax, or linen especially for their owners. This is why on Jacquard coverlets you will see the name of the owner, the name of the weaver, and the date. This coverlet was made by D.L. Myers from Bethel Township in Ohio for Barbara Berrey in 1845. The name and date inscriptions are accompanied by curlicues and flower shapes.

The coverlet shows a rose and floral medallion design--with roses in red and floral medallions in navy crossed through with gold.

The wool and cotton coverlet measures 72 inches wide with 3-inch fringe by 96 inches long with 4-inch fringe--so it is fringed on all sides. This fringe is gold on the ends and Four-color on the sides. Beyond a small amount of the fringe having worn away on one corner, it is in excellent usable condition-either as a coverlet or for display.

For more information on these coverlets, see the Allison/Antrum Museum exhibition of March 2002 in Greencastle, Pennsylvania site. John Heisey's book "A Checklist of American Coverlet Weavers" is also an excellent source.

Here is some information on coverlets which I excerpted from that compiled by Bonnie A. Shockey as well as some of my own.
