1845-D $5 MS63 PCGS.
1845-D $5 MS63 PCGS. Ex: Bass. Variety 12-I. (per Doug Winter's second edition and revised attribution system). The date is far to the left. This is the more common of the two varieties known.RARITY INFORMATION: Remarkably, the Green Pond Collection contains two high quality 1845-D half eagles. Even more remarkable is the fact that these two coins were previously offered as lots 948 and 949 in the October 1999 Bass II Sale. This coin is one of just three 1845-D half eagles that have been graded Mint State-63 by PCGS. The other two are the Duke's Creek/Eliasberg coin and the Chestatee/Milas coin which we sold at auction in our 1999 ANA sale.STRIKE: The strike seen on this piece is every bit as sharp as that seen on the amazing MS65 1845-D half eagle that is seen above in this exceptional collection of Dahlonega gold coinage. The central detail is complete with no weakness seen on the curl below the ear, the curls around the face of Liberty or on the eagle's neck and claws. For the collector who requires a very sharply struck 1845-D half eagle for a date or type set, one would be hard-pressed to find a better detailed piece than this.SURFACES: There are a few light, scattered ticks in the fields but the overall quality of the surfaces is very high for the grade. In fact, there are no marks that are readily discernible without reasonably strong magnification.LUSTER: The luster is thick and very frosty with a more grainy texture than that seen on the MS65 1845-D in this collection. The luster has not been disturbed or enhanced in any way and this should appeal to the collector who appreciates originality.COLORATION: The coloration of this coin is lovely with medium orange-gold color that changes to a deeper hue around the borders. The obverse shows slightly deeper color than the reverse and has more of a two-tone appearance. Both sides are clearly original and this coin has obviously never been cleaned or dipped.EYE APPEAL: This sharply struck, highly lustrous coin has excellent surfaces and lovely original color. The eye appeal is very high for the date and grade.COMPARABLES: The Duke's Creek Collection coin, a very choice PCGS MS63 example, brought $10,450 back in 1982 when it was offered as lot 437 in the Eliasberg Sale. More recently, we sold the Chestatee example, also graded MS63 for $14,950 in our 1999 ANA Auction. It was earlier sold as lot 459 in the Stack's May 1995 Milas Collection auction, where it realized $20,700.PEDIGREE: Obtained via Doug Winter from Bowers and Merena's October 1999 Bass II Sale, lot 949, at $20,700; previously from Joe Flynn via private treaty in March 1978. Important notice: Heritage usually auctions material at the rate of 200-250 lots per hour. On some occasions eBay Live bid software or the Internet may not be able to keep up with the pace of the auction. We recommend placing a realistic absentee bid now as insurance to avoid disappointment. Occasionally the auctioneer may eliminate or reject an eBay Live bid, and the auctioneer may also reopen a lot after the close of the eBay live bidding (usually because we missed an audience bid), and may reject your bid even if it shows you as the winning bidder. By bidding via eBay Live, you agree that Heritage may award the lot to another bidder at its sole discretion under the circumstances described above or any other reasonable circumstances. Also please note that all Heritage lots purchased through eBay Live carry a 20% Buyer's Premium. Please make sure you read the Terms and Conditions before you bid.
