1845-D $2 1/2 MS62 PCGS.
1845-D $2 1/2 MS62 PCGS. Variety 6-I. (per Doug Winter's second edition and revised attribution system). The only variety produced this year. Late die state with no repunching on the 18 and light clashmarks in the centers.RARITY INFORMATION: In terms of its overall rarity, the 1845-D is similar to the 1844-D. However, in high grades, the 1845-D is considerably more rare. In fact, there are only three unquestionably Uncirculated pieces known: a single PCGS MS63 and two graded MS62 by PCGS. This is the only Uncirculated 1845-D quarter eagle that is likely to be available to collectors for many years as the other two are off the market in tightly-held private collections.STRIKE: This is an issue that is generally well struck and the Green Pond example shows good detail overall. There is some minor weakness at the central obverse with the hair above the ear not quite fully separated. The reverse has a bit of weakness on the neck feathers but the eagle's wings and legs are quite sharp.SURFACES: As a rule, the 1845-D quarter eagle is seen with deep, detracting marks. This coin has very nice surfaces. The obverse has a few small marks in front and in back of the head of Liberty, while the reverse has a few nicks below the left (facing) wing. There are no hairlines or signs of cleaning. A series of double clashmarks bisect the eagle's right (facing) wing and these are, of course, mint-made.LUSTER: Bold, frosty luster is clear evidence of this coin's complete originality. There are just a small handful of this issue that have not been cleaned or dipped. We cannot recall having viewed an 1845-D quarter eagle that had better luster than this coin.COLORATION: Attractive medium green-gold color can be seen on both sides with the reverse a bit deeper in hue than the obverse. This color is original and has not been enhanced. This is a very rare issue with original color.EYE APPEAL: This is an uncommonly nice 1845-D quarter eagle. It is sharply struck and lustrous with good surfaces and original color. It is extremely challenging to locate an example of this issue that has good eye appeal.COMPARABLES: There are three nice Uncirculated 1845-D quarter eagles known. The finest, graded MS63 by PCGS, is in the Duke's Creek Collection. It sold for $26,450 in the October 1999 Bass II Sale. The other MS62 is in a Kansas collection and is Ex: 1999 ANA (Heritage), lot 7643 where it realized $12,650.PEDIGREE: Obtained from Doug Winter in July 1999; earlier Ex: North Carolina Collection; Wynn Carner; Superior (1/89), lot 304; Dr. Phillip Weinstein; and Stack's (12/72), lot 304. This is the plate coin in the second edition of the Winter book and is listed in the current Condition Census as the second finest known.
