1845-D $2 1/2 AU58 NGC. Produced to the extent of just 19,460 pieces, the 1845-D has an extant population of perhaps 120-130 coins. This issue is similar in overall rarity to the 1844-D, but it is rarer in high grades. In fact, Winter (1997) rates the 1845-D as the 11th rarest D-mint Quarter Eagle in AU and Mint State grades. This is a rather well produced coin for a product of the Dahlonega Mint with minimal softness of detail over the obverse hair curls and reverse neck feathers. Warm olive-gold and reddish-orange colors blend together over both sides to present an attractive outward appearance. Even under a loupe the surfaces retain this above average eye appeal, as there are few sizeable distractions for a circulated gold coin from one of the branch mints that serviced the Appalachian Gold Rush. A couple of abrasions on the reverse around the D in the denomination are the only blemishes that are worthy of individual mention. Population: 12 in 58, with just two certified Mint State (7/02).
