1845<$5> MS62 PCGS. The mintage of the 1845-P was a substantial 417,099 pieces. However, as one can easily tell from looking at the combined population data from both of the major services, a very small percentage of the mintage was set aside in mint condition. Probably fewer than 50 coins are known today in MS60 and better grades. The obverse of this piece is struck from a different die than the MS64 listed below, but the reverse appears to be the same with numerous vertical shield stripes extending through the horizontal lines in the shield. Very sharply struck on each side with uncommonly strong definition for a half eagle from this era on the eagle's neck and leg. Bright green-gold coloration with slightly reflective fields and minimal abrasions. Population: 6 in 62, 15 finer (8/05).
