1845<1/2 C> Second Restrike. SR-22, B-3, R.6. PR65 Brown NGC. PR60 EAC. Small date; Small berries, file marks at RICA. Early state of the reverse die with file marks clear, and diagonal striae fully visible. This is the plate coin in the second edition of Cohen. Number 14 of 19 examples listed by Richard Coleman in his Monograph of Second Restrike Proof Half Cents. The date has the digit 5 leaning to the right and distinctly recut. The obverse has intermingled olive and chocolate-brown tones while the reverse is fully a rich olive color. Pale blue accents add to the overall eye appeal on both sides. The fields are mildly reflective and not deeply mirrored as expected on these Proofs. Some design weakness is noted, especially on Liberty's hair strands over the ear, and on some of the leaves in the wreath. A thin line of bright copper color extends from the top of Liberty's head to the border just below star 9, the result of a mild abrasion in that area. Without this abrasion, the EAC grade would approach the NGC grade. This example appears to qualify as Series V in Breen's notation.
Ex: Stack's (4/1962), lot 235; 1976 ANA (Stack's), lot 195; Superior (10/1977), lot 151; Julian Leidman (7/18/1978). Envelope Included.
