1844<S$1> MS63 PCGS. The amount of bullion that flowed into the Philadelphia Mint in 1844 was meager enough to preclude a large production of Silver Dollars. Although later dollar issues were called upon to augment the United States' burgeoning trade with China, the 1844 pieces preceded this order by several years and fulfilled their service largely within the country's borders. Despite its tendency to stay at home, however, few Mint State specimens of this issue were preserved for later generations.
This is an attractive coin for the grade that displays frosty luster and a moderately prooflike finish that are both indicative of the issue. A feature that is confined to this issue is the prominent obverse doubling on the shield. The strike is above average for the series with minimal flatness visible on the eagle's neck and leg feathers. A fully brilliant finish is seen on both sides and only a few grade-defining abrasions are seen, mostly on the reverse. This is a truly rare coin that is worthy of a strong bid.
