1844<S$1> MS60 PCGS. The amount of bullion that flowed into the Philadelphia Mint in 1844 was meager enough to preclude a large delivery of silver dollars. A mere 20,000 pieces were produced and Mint State survivors are understandably scarce. As of June 2005, PCGS has certified just 24 Mint State examples, and NGC has seen 17 specimens. The coin in this lot has light gray patina with cobalt-blue and golden-brown accents, and exhibits sharply struck design elements. A few light contact marks are scattered over each side, though none are worthy of individual mention. As is typical of this issue, the shield is die doubled, and has four lines within the vertical stripe. Population: 2 in 60, 22 finer (6/05).
From The Dr. John L.
