<B>1844-O $5 AU58 PCGS.</B></I> Despite the relatively high mintage of more than 364,000 pieces, the 1844-O half eagle is elusive in Mint State, and the average survivor only grades AU50 or so. The present piece is extremely well struck for an O-mint coin of this era, showing only minor weakness on the highpoint hair under Liberty's coronet, and trifling softness on the fletchings. Much luster and a hint of prooflikeness radiate from the attractive yellow-gold surfaces.
