1844 MS64 PCGS. This is a P-mint that was not given
1844 MS64 PCGS. This is a P-mint that was not given much respect (to quote the late Rodney Dangerfield) by Messrs. Wiley and Bugert. In their 1993 reference on the series, they had this to say about the 1844: "Similar in scarcity to the 1844-O in circulated grades but more common in mint state as are most P-mints when compared to branch mints of the same date." In our experience, the 1844 is a seldom-seen coin in MS64 condition, even though the Mint cranked out 1.7 million pieces. It appears to us that it is a significant condition rarity in the finer Mint State grades as only 15 pieces have been so graded by PCGS with none finer (1/05). This is a fully struck example that shows just the lightest toning over each side that deepens significantly around the margins. The only mentionable post-striking impairment is a long, thin scratch that starts in the upper left field and extends diagonally across the breast of Liberty. Lot:7039
