1844 George Washington & Henry Clay Pewter Rim Native American “Nativist” Endorsement Pewter Portrait Badge
c. 1844 Presidential Campaign Henry Clay & George Washington, Native American Endorsement Pewter Rim Portrait Badge. HC-1844-56B. With Original Suspension Loop, Choice Extremely Fine.
HC-1844-56B. 65mm. Pewter. This rare 1844 Presidential Campaign Badge displays the engraved portrait images of Henry Clay and George Washington on either side of this 2.5" diameter Pewter-Rim Medallion with its original integral Loop attached at top for suspension. There is very trivial faint damp stain on both sides, the loop at the top is totally original to the piece. We have seen other types with mirrors on one side, or having portraits of the Vice Presidential Candidate Theodore Frelinghuysen. The portrait of George Washington indicates the endorsement of Henry Clay by the “Nativists,” a political party that would later become known as the “Know-Nothing Party.” The “Nativist” Party was a political force to be reckoned with in 1844. They endorsed the candidacy of Henry Clay that year. George Washington typically appears on practically all of the “Nativist” political ribbons issued at that time in American history. A similar example recently sold at public auction in February 2018 for $2,060. A lovely specimen, and an excellent example for display.
