1844-D $5 MS63 PCGS. Formerly sold as lot 7675 in our 1999 FUN Sale of the Chestatee Collection, where it was described as, "Very well struck and frosty with light orange-gold and green color. The surfaces are remarkably clean for a Dahlonega Half Eagle, with just a few light marks visible under magnification. This coin has a number of positive factors to recommend it. In addition to its considerable eye appeal and the attributes described above, it has a great pedigree and it is probably the third finest known example of this issue... "Variety 9-G. Reverse of 1843-D with a large mintmark. All of the 1844-D Half Eagles we have examined are from this die pair, but we would not be surprised if at least one other variety existed."From the Chestatee Collection; Ex: Bareford Collection (Stack's, 12/78), lot 167; Ex: Ed Milas Collection (Stack's, 5/95), lot 456, where it realized $25,300.
