1844-D $5 MS63 NGC. Variety 11-H. Medium Mintmark; Reverse of 1843-D. The only variety of this year known. Although the combined NGC/PCGS population approaches the 400-coin mark (including the inevitable duplications), there are only 22 pieces in Mint State. One piece each at NGC and PCGS is graded MS64. In MS63 the two services have each graded two pieces, putting the present coin squarely within the Condition Census for its issue. This piece has a needle-sharp strike, which is unusual for a Dahlonega Mint gold coin, and the semi-prooflike surfaces are free from any Mint-made planchet defects. There are no distracting abrasions, and the eye appeal fully merits its certified designation. Census: 2 in 63, 1 finer (1/08).

Coin Engraver: Christian Gobrecht

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
