<B>1844-D<$5> MS61 PCGS.</B></I> Not Variety 11-H. The date is slightly further left than on the "common" variety, with the second 4 centered between the bust and the denticles. On this Uncirculated example, light recutting is also visible on the crossbar of the first 4. The borders of this unblemished example are fully struck, while the centers of the major devices are slightly soft. Luster dominates the devices and legends. A few faint slide marks on the left obverse help decide the grade. Dahlonega Mint production was never high, but it peaked between 1843 and 1845. The Georgian gold fields were largely played out by the 1850s, although the branch mint kept the presses churning by coining California-mined bullion. Population: 8 in 61, 7 finer (9/06).
