1844 Clay Boston No. 1 Clay Club Silk Ribbon.
1844 Henry Clay "Boston No. 1 Clay Club" Silk Ribbon. This ribbon measures 9.5" long and 3" wide. The words "Boston No 1. Clay Club." are set between two small seals. The first seal depicts the state seal of Massachusetts; a native American bearing a bow and arrow inside a small circle flanked by oak branches. A small ribbon runs below this which says, "Ense Petit Placidam Sublibertate Quietem." [By the sword we seek peace, but peace only under liberty.] The second seal is the Boston Seal and it pictures the city of Boston and the date it was founded, 1630 and also the Latin phrase "Sicut Patribus Sit Deus Nobis" [God be with us He was with our Fathers.] This ribbon is in excellent condition; with selvage intact, one small wrinkle on the left edge. Complete, fine fringe, as made, across top and bottom. The blue on white color is unusual and distinctive, and we have not seen this impressive design, unlisted by Sullivan and Fischer, previously.
