1844-C $5 MS60 NGC. Variety 7-D. Die State II, with a die crack visible from the eagle's neck through the eagle's right (facing) wing and the first A in AMERICA. In 1845, the Charlotte Mint's production was stalled for the year by a devastating fire, and the pieces from the previous year, quarter eagles and half eagles alike, circulated more heavily than they would have otherwise. The 1844-C half eagle is challenging in all grades, and the vast majority of examples have inferior visual appeal. This unworn survivor has pleasing detail overall with a boldly impressed eagle and only slight softness on Liberty's hair. The satiny green-gold surfaces offer hints of canary-yellow on each side. While numerous abrasions are present on each side, including a number of extended luster grazes and abrasions, most of these flaws are shallow, and the eye appeal is better than the grade might suggest. A significant example of this noted Charlotte half eagle issue. Census: 2 in 60, 5 finer (7/07).

Coin Engraver: Christian Gobrecht

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information\)
