1844-C $5 AU55 NGC. The 1844-C is the third rarest Charlotte half eagle in all grades (along with the 1846-C) and it is the fifth rarest in high grades. Around 75 to 85 pieces are known with just 9 to 11 of these grading AU plus another 5 or 6 in Mint State. The reason for this date's rarity in higher grades has to do with the fact that the Charlotte Mint was closed in 1845 as a result of a fire. With no coins struck in 1845 (along with growing public distrust of Bechtler Mint products due to underweight coins of questionable fineness), half eagles dated 1844-C saw considerable use in circulation. Surprisingly sharply detailed, with weakness only on the eagle's right claw. The surfaces are pleasing and problem-free. A heavy die crack (as struck) travels from the eagle's neck to the rim. Important notice: We expect to be auctioning lots at the rate of 200-250 per hour. Sometimes eBay Premier live bid software cannot keep up with that pace, so we strongly recommend that you place a realistic proxy bid now as insurance to avoid disappointment. Also please note that all Heritage/CAA lots purchased through eBay Premier carry a 20% Buyer's Premium.
