1844-C $5 AU53 PCGS. Variety 7-D. Die State II with a reverse crack from the first A in AMERICA to the wing. This coin just misses qualifying at the AU55 level and, perhaps, if it had a touch more luster it would. It is original with light, scattered marks over medium green-gold surfaces. On the reverse, there are a few abrasions clustered above the head of the eagle. Overall, this is an appealing example of one of the scarcer dates in the series.
Around 100 or so examples are known and many grade VF to XF. In properly graded AU condition, the 1844-C half eagle is quite scarce and it becomes rare in the AU55 to AU58 range. This is a very rare coin in Uncirculated with perhaps as few as six or seven known. The finest is still the Charlotte Mint Museum coin which, by today's standards, grades at least MS64.
From The Carolina Circle Collection.

Coin Engraver: Christian Gobrecht

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
