1844-C $5 AU50 PCGS. The 1844-C Half Eagle is even more rare than the low mintage of 23,631 pieces would indicate. In fact, branch mint gold expert Douglas Winter considers it to be the third rarest Charlotte $5 issue. He theorizes that its rarity is partly due to the decline in purity of the Bechtler private mint, and partly because a fire at the Charlotte mint in 1845 interrupted its production. Regardless of the reason, the rarity of the 1844-C issue is irrefutable. This impressive survivors has typically mushy details on some of the stars and eagle's plumage.
