1844-C $2 1/2 MS62 NGC. The 1844-C is known as one of the worst produced Charlotte quarter eagles in the series. The typical coin is poorly struck with numerous nicks and scratches, and many show planchet laminations as well. When viewing this coin, one would not know that is the case. The obverse is well struck, but the reverse displays striking softness on the eagle's feathers; however, this is not inconsistent with the definition seen on many Charlotte coins. The reddish-gold surfaces show very few abrasions, the most obvious being a scratch between stars 3 and 4, and we do not see any evidence of improper planchet preparation. The Condition Census for this issue lists a PCGS MS62 in Paul Dingler's collection, followed by an MS60 coin. With this coin off the market for almost 25 years, and purchased by the consigner at a time when the conventional wisdom according to David Akers was that there were no Mint State pieces, it would seem that a rethinking of the upper Condition Census for this issue is in order. This piece should be considered at least second finest, if not tied for finest known.
From The Beverly Hills Collection. Lot:7557
