1844-C<$2 1/2> MS61 PCGS. Variety 6-E. A small emission of 11,622 pieces, years of circulation in the South prior to the Civil War, and indifferent production at the Charlotte mint, have served to make the 1844-C one of the most difficult Quarter Eagles from that mint to acquire in Mint State. Douglas Winter estimates that only three Charlotte issues, the 1841-C, 1842-C, and 1846-C, are more rare in AU or better grades. On the present piece, the strike on the stars and eagle is typical for the issue, but the luster is extensive, bright, and rather prooflike. Honey-gold color is consistent throughout both sides. A couple of pinpoint ticks show on the cheek, but these are appropriate for the grade, especially since the remainder of the surfaces are splendidly clean. Population: 1 in 61, 3 finer (11/05).
