1844-C<$2 1/2> AU58 PCGS. Variety 6-E. This piece is extremely scarce in Choice XF and very rare in AU, with about two dozen examples known, according to gold guru Douglas Winter. That latter figure correlates nicely with the certified population data from NGC and PCGS, which list 22 examples in AU58, with 14 higher (or submission events, as Bowers calls them). This piece is usually found with much-abraded surfaces, and so this coin is a pleasant surprise, as it is only lightly abraded, with greenish-gold surfaces. Just a trace of rub shows on the eyebrow and cheek. The strike is fairly soft through the centers of both sides, but numerous individual strands of hair can be seen above the coronet, and the reverse peripheral strike is excellent. This is a rare opportunity to own this attractive example of a rare issue in such a high grade. Census: 10 in 58, 10 finer (7/06).
