<B>1844-C $2 1/2 AU58 PCGS.</B></I> Variety 6-E. Greenish-gold fields with good luster are the hallmark of this delightful C-mint issue, among the most difficult of the C-mint quarter eagles. By 1844, public confidence in the Bechtler gold coinage had waned, and a fire at the Charlotte Mint in July 1844 exerted added pressure on the mintage of 11,622 pieces. Most pieces of this issue saw extensive circulation.
