1844-C $2 1/2 AU55 PCGS. Variety 6-E. The quality of strike for this date varies and examples are known with very poor strikes. This piece, however, shows much better detail than usual with uncommonly sharp centers and a few of the stars actually display radial line definition. The reverse is slightly weak in the center but the overall quality of strike is still a bit above average for the issue. There is some light friction in the fields as well as a few scattered marks on the reverse that are located above the eagle's head, but this coin shows only minor wear and it was relatively well handled. A good deal of luster is present on both sides and the color is attractive with light yellow-gold hues that deepen toward the borders. This is a wholesome and pleasing Choice About Uncirculated 1844-C quarter eagle and it is a scarce issue in this grade. Housed in an older PCGS holder and it appears to be conservatively graded.
While 11,622 pieces were struck, this date is scarcer than generally believed, especially in higher grades. The Mint was burned in July 1844 by a burglar and production was halted until early 1846. Because of this, 1844-C quarter eagles tend to have a lower survival rate than other dates of this era and most are found well worn. Only five Uncirculated 1844-C quarter eagles are believed known and there may only be 16-21 properly graded AUs. This is clearly among the scarcest quarter eagles from this mint, both in terms of overall and high grade rarity.
From The Carolina Circle Collection.

Coin Engraver: Christian Gobrecht

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
