1844 50C MS64 NGC. Writing in 1993, Randy Wiley and Bill Bugert had this to say about the rarity of the 1844: "Similar in scarcity to the 1844-O in circulated grades but more common in mint state as are most P-mints when compared to branch mints of the same date." In our opinion, this statement does not do justice to the rarity of the near-Gem that we are offering here. Despite a respectable original mintage of 1.7 million pieces, the '44-P is a significant condition rarity in the finer Mint State grades. The tow major services have certified only 30 pieces in this grade level, and a mere two finer (2/05). This specimen is sharply struck, with lustrous silver-gray surfaces. A few minute obverse marks limit the grade. Population: 17 in 64, 2 finer (2/05).
From The Richard J. Chouinard Collection of United States Coins, Part Three.
