1844 $2 1/2 MS62 NGC. Simply put, this is a rare issue. When offered at all, the 1844 (6,784 pieces produced) is apt to grade no finer than XF. Writing in 1975, David Akers stated that he had never seen a Mint State 1844 Quarter Eagle. He did, however, note that the Bell and Roach sales of 1944 both included an Uncirculated example. The advent of third party grading has brought countless numismatic rarities out of hiding where they could be included in today's population reports. Among these treasures are four Mint State 1844 Quarter Eagles: an MS60 example at PCGS and three NGC coins, one each in MS60, MS61, and MS62 (7/02). As the population data states, the present example is the single finest certified 1844 Two-and-a-Half. We do not know if it is one of the coins that sold in the aforementioned sales of 1944, but we strongly suspect that it is the finest known survivor of this low mintage date. The moderately bright fields form a splendid backdrop to the generally sharp devices. Some striking softness is seen on the eagle's left (facing) leg, but this is a not uncommon feature for the type. Attractive yellow-gold color envelops both sides, neither of which reveals more distractions than one should expect for the MS62 grade level. A planchet void (as struck) at the left base of the first 4 in the date is useful for pedigree purposes. Including this coin, we have handled two of the four certified Mint State 1844 Quarter Eagles in today's hobby. The other, the MS60 PCGS example, appeared as lot 335 in our pre-ANAheim Bullet Auction (8/1995), and again as lot 725 in our Santa Clara Bullet Auction (11/1995). Important notice: We expect to be auctioning lots at the rate of 200-250 per hour. Sometimes eBay Premier live bid software cannot keep up with that pace, so we strongly recommend that you place a realistic proxy bid now as insurance to avoid disappointment.
