1844<1C> PR63 Red and Brown NGC. Ex: P. Kaufman. N-8, High R.6. We can only assume the die engraver had a bad night, or perhaps a little too much rum while he was working, for the first attempt at placing the date in this coinage die completely missed the proper position along the obverse rim. The upper serif from a stray digit 1 can be seen protruding from the upper curve of the bust line, and the top of a misplaced 8 is visible on Liberty's bust. Possibly as many as 14 or 15 examples of this proof-only date are known today. This example is a pleasing proof with lovely orange color, fading to light brown on each side. A hint of aquamarine toning near the stars adds to the overall aesthetic appeal of this delightful (and rare) proof cent. EAC PR63.
