Although later dollar issues were called upon to augment the United States' burgeoning trade with China, the 1844 pieces preceded this order by several years and fulfilled their service largely within the country's borders. A mere 20,000 pieces, however, were produced and Mint State survivors are understandably scarce. Prooflike tendencies are noticed on the obverse of this coin beneath rose-violet and olive toning, while mottled olive-gray hues are dispersed over the reverse. Minimally abraded and displaying strong definition throughout. Population: 12 in 62, 7 finer (1/05). Lot:7360
