1843 S$1 MS63 NGC. The shortage of domestic silver, long before the Comstock Lode was discovered in 1859, was a problem that persisted throughout much of the 1840s. In 1840 only about $25,000/year was mined domestically, requiring the silver supplies required for domestic coinage to be either imported or melted from foreign silver coins. Accordingly, in 1843 the Mint produced only 165,100 silver dollars for circulation, a number far smaller than the actual demand. This piece offers lustrous, silvery surfaces with amber-gold patina in the protected areas. A few miscellaneous nicks and scrapes account for the grade, but this piece generates much appeal.

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
