1843<S$1> MS62 PCGS. Despite its status as the most easily obtainable Seated Dollar from the 1840s in circulated grades, the 1843 (165,100 pieces struck) is anything but common in Mint State. Indeed, since the late 1980's, only 18 1843 dollars grading MS62 have made appearances through the major auction houses, with 27 pieces grading finer. The example in this lot is sharply struck, save for minor softness in the stars along the right (facing) border. The surfaces are virtually untoned, and reveal fields that are somewhat prooflike in appearance. There are a few small contact marks scattered about, the most prominent occurring on Liberty's chest. Population: 18 in 62, 15 finer (6/05).
From The Dr. John L. Pellegrini Collection of Liberty Seated Dollars.
