1843-O $2 1/2 Large Date, Plain 4 AU58 NGC. This variety is much scarcer than the Small Date variety. Less than two dozen Mint State examples have been certified at NGC and PCGS combined, from which the inevitable resubmissions must be excluded. Doug Winter's Gold Coins of the New Orleans Mint 1839-1909 comments of this issue, "The 1843-O is the second and rarest of the two varieties of quarter eagle struck this year at the New Orleans mint. It is the second rarest issue in this series but it remains relatively unknown outside the specialist community." The present example shows aesthetic qualities that are far superior to those usually seen, with good luster emanating from greenish-yellow surfaces. Only tiny abrasions are seen under a loupe, along with the inevitable die rust on Liberty's neck, and the eye appeal is grand. Census: 28 in 58, 11 finer (1/07).

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
