1843 N-14 R6+ Proof-Only Variety PCGS graded Genui
1843 N-14 R6+ Proof-Only Variety PCGS graded "Genuine." The obverse was lightly cleaned and is toned glossy medium brown and light chocolate. The reverse is a much more attractive steel brown and chocolate with a small splash of slightly lighter toning at ER in AMERICA. The fields are reflective on both sides, but the mirrors are significantly deeper on the reverse than on the obverse thanks to the light cleaning. A faint scuff in the field left of star 11 left a slightly lighter shade of brown in that area. The only other notable mark is a tiny planchet void in the field before the nose (as struck). Not a perfect example, but not too bad for this very rare proof-only variety. Called Proof-55 and CC#10 in the Denis Loring census of proof large cents. Our grade is Proof-55. The proof status of this piece is noted on the PCGS grading label, which also displays the Newcomb attribution.
Estimated Value $4,000-UP.
