1843 Liberty Seated Dollar PCGS PR63
Matte-gray to dull russet color. Produced in unknown although logically very limited numbers, the Proof 1843 is similar in overall rarity to the 1842, 1844, 1845, 1847, and 1848 issues. Attractively toned, the present example is awash in dominant old-silver patina with underlying choice mirrors. A razor sharp strike leaves little doubt about this coin's Proof status, as do modest hints of a uniformly brilliant finish that are evident at more direct light angles. There is no outward disturbance, and the surfaces may have had available a finer Choice rating were the original mint reflection deeper in sheen. We can recall handling only a few other Proof 1843 seated dollars, and those were years ago.

The reverse die that the Mint used to strike this coin is that which Breen refers to as the "Reverse of 1842-1852" and Bowers refers to as the "Reverse of 1840-1850." It may be that this die was prepared around 1840 and used to strike original Proof Seated Dollars of the 1840-1850 era. Combined PCGS and NGC Population: 6 or 7; 1 finer. (#6984)
