1843-D Small D $2 1/2MS63 PCGS.
1843-D Small D $2 1/2MS63 PCGS. Variety 4-F. (per Doug Winter's second edition and revised attribution system). Small mintmark; reverse of 1842. The most common of the three small mintmark varieties of this year. Easily identifiable by a reverse die crack through the F in OF.RARITY INFORMATION: The 1843-D is the most available quarter eagle from the Dahlonega mint. It is relatively easy to locate in lower grades and only moderately scarce in the lower About Uncirculated grades but it becomes very scarce in AU55 or better. It is very rare and much underrated in Uncirculated with just four or five pieces known. As of November 2003 this particular coin is one of two graded MS63 by PCGS with none better.STRIKE: The strike is extremely sharp with the hair above the ear of Liberty completely defined. There are also full radial lines in the stars, complete wing tips and no weakness on the eagle's legs. This is generally a well struck issue but this is still one of the better detailed 1843-D quarter eagles we can recall having seen.SURFACES: A few very light hairlines (not from cleaning) lie on the surfaces. There are no really noticeable marks other than some faint mint-made clashmarks in the right obverse field and a shallow, easily-missed dig to the right of star 11. As a rule, this date is generally found with very heavily marked surfaces.LUSTER: The luster is frosty with the fields showing a slightly different, semi-prooflike texture than the borders which are of a more grainy texture.COLORATION: As sometimes seen on 1843-D quarter eagles, the coloration on this piece has a two-toned appearance with light green-gold centers framed by rings of deeper orange-gold at the peripheries. This color is quite attractive and is original. It is far more appealing than usual for this issue.EYE APPEAL: This is an extremely pleasing 1843-D quarter eagle. It has a full strike with nice color over clean, original surfaces.COMPARABLES: It does not appear that an 1843-D graded higher than MS61 by a major third-party service has sold at auction in the past fifteen years. We auctioned a PCGS MS61 in our 1999 FUN sale that brought $14,950.PEDIGREE: Obtained from Doug Winter at the 2000 ANA convention in Philadelphia; Ex: Bob Harwell/Jeff Garrett; 1999 ANA Sale (Heritage, 8/99), lot 7641; Chestatee Collection; Hancock and Harwell; Michigan Collection; Stack's (10/91), lot 1830. This is the plate coin in the second edition of the Winter book on Dahlonega gold and it is listed in the current Condition Census as the finest known 1843-D quarter eagle. Important notice: Heritage usually auctions material at the rate of 200-250 lots per hour. On some occasions eBay Live bid software or the Internet may not be able to keep up with the pace of the auction. We recommend placing a realistic absentee bid now as insurance to avoid disappointment. Occasionally the auctioneer may eliminate or reject an eBay Live bid, and the auctioneer may also reopen a lot after the close of the eBay live bidding (usually because we missed an audience bid), and may reject your bid even if it shows you as the winning bidder. By bidding via eBay Live, you agree that Heritage may award the lot to another bidder at its sole discretion under the circumstances described above or any other reasonable circumstances.
