1843-D<$5> Small D MS63 NGC. Variety 10-G. The variety is confirmed by the mintmark D being positioned over the V in FIVE. The 10-H variety shows the D mintmark centered over the VE of FIVE. The '43-D is not rare as a date, and is actually one of the more available half eagles from the Dahlonega Mint. The current 10-G variety, however, is several times scarcer than its 10-H cousin.
A bold striking is noted on the design elements, though the arrow feather is somewhat soft. Rich yellow-gold color and shimmering, semi-reflective luster characterize both sides. Modest scuffiness and light abrasions in the fields and on Liberty's neck are the primary grade-limiting factors.
Production of Dahlonega half eagles reached its zenith in 1843 when 98,452 pieces were struck. Uncirculated representatives, however, are far and few in between. Indeed, NGC and PCGS combined have certified only 20 Mint State coins. A minor die crack extends from the rim through the M of AMERICA and peters out close to the right wing of the eagle. Census: 3 in 63, 1 finer (1/06).
