1843-D $5 Small D AU55 PCGS.
1843-D $5 Small D AU55 PCGS. Variety 10-G. (per Doug Winter's second edition and revised attribution system). Small mintmark. Reverse of 1842-D. This is a rare and important naked-eye variety that is beginning to sell for a substantial premium over the more common 1843-D medium mintmark half eagle.RARITY INFORMATION: It is not known exactly how many of the 1843-D half eagles that were struck employed the small mintmark reverse of 1842. We believe that this variety is many times scarcer than the medium mintmark variant, especially in higher grades. We are not aware of a single 1843-D small mintmark half eagle that grades higher than AU58 and believe that the present AU55 is close to the top of the Condition Census for this variety.STRIKE: The strike is slightly above average with some weakness in the centers. A number of examples of this variety show considerable weakness at the centers.SURFACES: Some scattered marks can be seen on both sides. This includes a reasonably noticeable mark on the cheek of Liberty.LUSTER: Some luster can be seen in the protected areas on the obverse and the reverse. This is one of just two or three small mintmark 1843-D half eagles that we have seen with any luster. Most are worn to the point that no luster remains.COLORATION: There are splashes of light green-gold color on the obverse and reverse. Much of the original color has been removed as a result of the coin having been dipped at one time.EYE APPEAL: This is an acceptable, commercial quality example that is about as nice a coin for this rare and undervalued variety as one is likely to find.COMPARABLES: The Bass IV: 381 example, sold by Bowers and Merena in November 2000, was cataloged as "MS60" but it was a seawater coin with matte-like surfaces. It realized $2,645. No other higher grade 1843-D small mintmark half eagles have sold at auction in recent years.PEDIGREE: Ex: Harry Bass II (Bowers and Merena, 10/99), lot 925, where it brought $4,370; Quality Sales (12/70), lot 1702. Important notice: Heritage usually auctions material at the rate of 200-250 lots per hour. On some occasions eBay Live bid software or the Internet may not be able to keep up with the pace of the auction. We recommend placing a realistic absentee bid now as insurance to avoid disappointment. Occasionally the auctioneer may eliminate or reject an eBay Live bid, and the auctioneer may also reopen a lot after the close of the eBay live bidding (usually because we missed an audience bid), and may reject your bid even if it shows you as the winning bidder. By bidding via eBay Live, you agree that Heritage may award the lot to another bidder at its sole discretion under the circumstances described above or any other reasonable circumstances. Also please note that all Heritage lots purchased through eBay Live carry a 20% Buyer's Premium. Please make sure you read the Terms and Conditions before you bid.
