1843-D $5 Small D AU55 PCGS. Variety 10
1843-D<$5> Small D AU55 PCGS. Variety 10-G. Although not designated as such, due to the older green-label PCGS holder, this is the scarce Small D variety that is seldom encountered in higher grades. Although the size of the mintmark is the distinguishing characteristic, the Small D and Medium D varieties are usually differentiated by the actual position of the mintmark. The Small D variety has the mintmark entirely over the letter V in FIVE, while the Medium D mintmark is centered over the space between the V and E in FIVE. Despite a large mintage of 98,452, the largest in the history of the Dahlonega Mint, few high quality examples of this variety are known. Nearly all survivors are the Medium D variety (sometimes called Large D). The notation in Breen's Complete Encyclopedia is confusing, as he noted the Small D variety is "very rare above EF" but made no general mention of rarity. For the Medium (or Large) D variety, he simply commented that it is "very scarce." This is a pleasing and brilliant greenish yellow-gold example with satiny luster and mostly sharp design features. It is not problem-free, yet is finer than most examples that are encountered. Encapsulated in a green label holder.
