1843-D $5 Medium D MS62 PCGS
1843-D $5 Small D MS62 PCGS. Variety 10-G. While the PCGS holder lists this piece as a Medium D, the position of the mintmark and its size identify it as the significantly more elusive Small D variety. The Medium D reverse has a mintmark above the gap between the V and E of FIVE, while the mintmark on the present coin is over the right side of the V exclusively, consistent with the Small D reverse. The surfaces of this immensely appealing example offer vibrant luster, slightly reflective in the centers with frosty margins. The color on the piece is beautiful, with peripheral orange-tinged haze that frames rich yellow-gold interiors. Lightly abraded in the fields but with a clean appearance overall, this coin is impressive for the grade.
This MS62 Small D piece is clearly among the finest known. The highest-graded Small D example graded by PCGS is a lone MS61, though the other MS62 Medium D half eagle and the four finer representatives of that variety must be considered suspect (7/07). In addition, NGC does not distinguish the Medium D and Small D variants, so one of the three Select pieces or the Choice coin at that service might be a Small D as well. Regardless, this gorgeous coin is an important example that could find a home in the finest cabinet of Dahlonega gold.

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information\)
