1843-D $5 Medium D MS61 NGC. Variety 10
1843-D<$5> Medium D MS61 NGC. Variety 10-H. Late obverse die state with several tiny raised lumps, the result of tiny pits in the original obverse die. This is an impressive green-gold example with sharp design details on both sides. The devices are surrounded by satiny and reflective fields presenting a delightful cameo appearance that is infrequently seen on Dahlonega Mint gold coins. The fields have a few faint hairlines and minor abrasions, but the only significant mark is a short diagonal scratch above the eagle's head. Few examples could possibly exceed this for quality. In fact, NGC and PCGS have each certified just four better grade examples, from a mintage of nearly 100,000 coins. Census: 10 in 61, 4 finer (2/06).
