1843-D $2 1/2 Large D MS62 NGC. Variety 4-H, the only Large D variety. In 1843, Dahlonega used at least four reverses to strike the sizable quarter eagle mintage for that year. The last reverse carried over to 1844 and 1846. Winter (2003) writes: "It is believed that 3,537 1843-D quarter eagles using this reverse were struck on October 7, 1843." The reverse is distinctive for its mintmark, which is distinctly larger than that on the other three. Its slight counterclockwise rotation and filled upper hollow are diagnostic.
As the variety that signals the change from the Small Mintmark to the Large Mintmark, this 1843-D variant is highly important in the context of Dahlonega gold. This lemon-gold representative, which has a slightly frosty obverse and a reflective reverse, offers powerful detail and excellent visual appeal despite light, scattered abrasions. A boldly impressed piece that must rank among the finest Large D examples known; NGC does not differentiate Medium D and Large D pieces but has graded only one coin finer, and PCGS, which does separate the two, has an MS61 as its single finest example (7/07).

Coin Engraver: William Kneass

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information\)
