1843-D $2 1/2 Large D MS62 NGC. Variety 4-H, the less-common Large D variety. Although this issue is generally available due to its large emission--by the standards of the mint and the era--of 36,209 business strikes, most examples encountered today are well circulated. D-mint gold pundit Doug Winter writes, "It is believed that 3,537 quarter eagles using this reverse were struck on October 7, 1843. ... This variety is quite rare and it should sell for a substantial premium over the common Small Mintmark varieties." PCGS now recognizes this variety, which should give it another boost. The present MS62 example is one of the finest Mint State pieces of the issue that Heritage has ever offered, save for two MS63 specimens, in the last dozen-plus years, and it may possibly be the finest certified of this rare variety. Both sides offer distraction-free surfaces, with beaming luster and attractive green-gold coloration. A well-struck, lovely, and rare piece.

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
