1843-C $5 AU55 PCGS. Variety 6-C. This is a solid coin for the grade with some scattered ticks seen on the obverse and reverse. There are a few hairlines over the head of Liberty but this coin gets points for its originality and it has never been cleaned or over-dipped. Both sides show pleasing light to medium yellow gold with delicate rose overtones. The strike is sharp except on the eagle's neck feathers which, as usual, are weak.
The 1843-C is actually one of the scarcer Charlotte half eagles in terms of overall rarity, but it is somewhat more available in higher grades than is usually assumed. It appears that a small hoard was found within the last decade or so as at least four or five comparatively high grade pieces (in the MS62 to MS64 range) have appeared in the market and all have similar surfaces. The finest is still the Miller/Milas coin that brought $55,000 all the way back in May 1995. It is currently in a PCGS MS64 holder.
From The Carolina Circle Collection.

Coin Engraver: Christian Gobrecht

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
