1843-C $2 1/2 Small Date, Crosslet 4 AU58 PCGS. Variety 4-C. Just one variety is known for the Small Date obverse of the 1843-C quarter eagle issue. While the mintage of quarter eagles at Charlotte during the year totaled 26,064 coins, nearly every one of those pieces was an example of the Large Date variety with a Plain 4 in the date. Most specialists agree that less than 3,000 pieces from the annual production were from this Small Date obverse. All known examples of the Small Date variety have a prominent die bulge in the left obverse field, just above the bust tip, and similarly, all known examples have a die crack from the border through the bust at about the same location. The small production of coins from this obverse die is clearly related to these defects. This piece has wonderful green-gold color with pale orange toning, and sharp design definition with essentially full luster. Population: 6 in 58, 5 finer (1/07).

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
