<B>1843-C $2 1/2 Small Date, Crosslet 4 AU55 NGC.</B></I> Variety 4-C. The 1843-C Small Date is the lowest mintage Charlotte Mint quarter eagle, and it is significantly scarcer than its Large Date counterpart. As usually seen with this variety, a bold die crack connects the bust tip to the rim, and the nearby field is swollen, courtesy of a failing obverse die. Of the 50-60 coins believed known of this major rarity, only 10-12 AU pieces are estimated to still exist. This slightly glossy example has substantial luster and a couple of moderate marks on the portrait.
