1843-C $2 1/2 Small Date, Crosslet 4 AU50 PCGS
1843-C $2 1/2 Small Date, Crosslet 4 AU50 PCGS. Variety 4-C. Die State III with a noticeable bulge in the lower left obverse field. The strike is somewhat irregular on the obverse, as always seen on the late die state of this variety; the reverse is relatively well detailed with good sharpness on the feathers and claws. Both the obverse and the reverse are a bit dull and show some slight roughness. It is possible that this is mint-made but it is more likely that this piece was either been buried at one time or, more likely, it was exposed to seawater. As a result, the surfaces are lackluster but are covered with a light yellow-gold color that is appealing. This piece should be viewed in-person to accurately formulate a bid but it is nicer than described. Housed in an older PCGS holder.
The 1843-C Small Date is the rarest Charlotte quarter eagle from the standpoint of total number known. There are probably around 65-75 pieces in existence with most grading from VF30 to XF45.
From The Carolina Circle Collection.

Coin Engraver: Christian Gobrecht

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
