1843-C<$2 1/2> Small Date, Crosslet 4 AU50 NGC. Variety 4-C. Die State II. The presence of an 1843-C Small Date quarter eagle is significant in any auction. Among Charlotte quarter eagles it has the lowest mintage with only 2,988 pieces delivered from a single pair of dies on December 23, 1842. It also has the lowest total number of coins known in all grades with only 50-60 pieces believed extant today. Of course, most of the survivors are heavily clustered in the VF-XF grade ranges, and AU coins are quite scarce. The Condition Census for this issue is surprisingly high with all the coins on the current C.C. in mint condition, perhaps indicating that a disproportionate number were set aside in high grade at the time of issue. As always, the obverse of this piece is better struck than the reverse. The surfaces are surprisingly clean for the issue and show deep reddish patina surrounding the devices.
