1843-C $2 1/2 Large Date, Plain 4 MS64 NGC. Variety 5-D, as always for the Large Date issue. The Plain 4 and recut 18 positively identify the Large Date variety. The mintmark is sharply recut outside the left side. Examination of high quality rarities is an enjoyable numismatic pursuit. Unusual characteristics are often missed on lower quality pieces.
On this piece, it is the shield that draws attention. Extensions of the vertical shield lines into the horizontal crossbars is not unusual on the silver and gold coinage. However, extensions entirely through the crossbars and the upper shield border is highly unusual. At least three of the vertical lines extend into the neck feathers. Several vertical lines also extend below the shield border. The midpoint of the eagle's neck is also pierced horizontally by a die line or crack.
Choice surfaces are highly lustrous with frosty yellow-gold. The central devices, especially on the reverse, are typically weak, but this weakness does not distract from the amazing eye appeal. Census: 2 in 64, 1 finer (6/07).

Coin Engraver: Christian Gobrecht

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
