1843 $5 MS62 NGC. Although limited when compared to the mintage figures of many later dates in the Liberty Half Eagle series, the 1843 was produced in generous numbers for the era. Nevertheless, few of the 611,205 pieces delivered were set aside with the result that, while this date is the second most common Half Eagle from the 1840s in an absolute sense, it is a scarce to rare coin in all Mint State grades. Both sides are powerfully impressed throughout with needle sharp definition. The color is a pleasing orange-gold shade with suggestions of olive-gold undertones, particularly on the obverse. A smattering of wispy abrasions seems to account for the BU designation, but the eye appeal is uncommonly strong for the date. This is a coin that belongs in an advanced date set of Liberty gold.
