The 1840s were a time of exploration in the Western third of America. Captain John Charles Frémont, nicknamed "the Pathfinder," directed one of the important scientific expeditions into the Rocky Mountains in 1842 and to the Great Basin between the Rockies and the Sierras in 1843-44. Frémont returned with reports on new genera and species of plants, maps of geological formations, and he made astronomical and meteorological observations. He also provided an engaging account of the expedition's journey in his memoirs, including a harrowing ride in an India-rubber boat on the Platte River as it coursed through a narrow canyon:
