1843 $10 Gold NGC graded AU58 w/PHOTOPROOF [L#1414
Pleasing old-gold color with choice rims, nice facial features, and a minimum of circulation wear and abrasions. Includes NGC Photo Proof Documentation. According to the NGC description, "This lovely example is among the finer survivors, NGC having certified just six others as About Uncirculated-58 and only a single piece higher (10-04). As an added bonus, however, this specimen is an example of Breen's variety 6861. Its entire date is fairly double punched with the base of numeral 4 showing a third punching, as well. With just a touch of weakness at its very centers, this coin is otherwise sharply struck. Prooflike brilliance may be seen in the protected areas."

It bears repeating, that at this early stage in America's coinage history (the 1840s in particular) the mint struck a wide range of doubled date, overdate, and other curious coins. This gives today's collectors a field day discovering new or previously forgotten varieties, sub-varieties, and sub-sub-varieties -- the range is almost limitless!
